he best news organizations make a habit of creating top-notch work on tight deadlines, but G4 Media LLC, a new cable-TV broadcast company dedicated to interactive video games and the people who play them, takes that concept to an extreme.
Last year, just three weeks after the Los Angeles broadcaster launched, it signed on to exhibit at the industry’s main event, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). Suddenly, it needed to design and fabricate a booth in two weeks — with a budget of less than $30,000. What’s more, the company wanted a totally enclosed, 10-by-20-foot soundproof production studio in which G4 crew members could tape interviews and report on industry news as it happened. Not many exhibits can find success by keeping out its visitors, but that’s exactly what G4 Media wanted.

Enter John Malcolmson and Simon Endres, partners in New York-based Hi-Score Design, and Freddie Georges Production Group in Garden Grove, CA. G4 asked this team to incorporate the company’s signature bright-orange color into a booth design that shuts out external noise while inviting attendees to linger outside and experience TV shows in production.

The eye-catching exhibit makes the grade. When in use, with the more than 100 orange-clad G4 reporters conducting interviews and producing show coverage,
it establishes a large brand presence in a small space.

“It’s a captivating fishbowl,” one judge says. Concludes another, “Maximum impact for minimum budget.”
